July 4th

I wrote this poem a few weeks ago, mostly because I hadn’t tried to write poetry in a few years which pains me to even say because I love the process so much. Like my attempts at painting, I may not create any masterpieces, but it feels really good to be in that creative space. I highly recommend you find your individual passions and practice them regularly. I’m at least feeling like the pen isn’t as rusty as it has been and I can keep going from here.

July 4th

As long as I can remember

I have always loved going to the park on my birthday

It is the summer air, thick with charcoal and laughter

Tastes like pipe smoke and beer, cotton candy and hot mustard breath.

We sit in anticipation with legs crossed on the crunchy grass,

disguised as friends

But I am the phoenix incarnate, risen from the ashes of my past,

A white wave erupted from the earth’s crusty surface.

We hold hands behind their backs and under our laps

We tell truths and laugh in secret.

The collective is staring upwards, transfixed on the lava rainbows

That sprout outwards in lotus- like starbursts

There are high pitched screams in reds and blues and purples

The greens roar into my chest like wild thunder

Our hearts in our palms fizzle proud

Until they fade to soft whispers of satiated smoke petals

Puffs of pastel jelly fish clouds.

With each explosion the crowd ooohs and ahhs in synchronistic wonder

But even without the legal papers, we have our life promises

We meet our delicious desires in this darkness.

They are too injured by lies and so cannot see

These are not just ordinary sky filled jewels

These birthday fireworks belong only to you

Only to me

Please do! Just be sure to include this complete blurb with it:

I am a 43 year old mother of 3, living in Florida with my partner and youngest child. Like the mythological phoenix, I have been reborn out of the ashes of my former way of life and have, for the last several years, set out on an exploration of self expression through visual art and creative writing. I am immensely grateful to feel a part of every living thing in existence and the emergence of a growing evolution of consciousness within and throughout. I am interested in all aspects of energy healing and spiritual transformation and have just recently become a student of Reiki. I understand there is always a choice and I try to choose love over fear at every turn. I am grateful for all of the other women in this group and for their ever present support and guidance.
