What is the verse you are here to contribute?

“O me! O life!… of the questions of these recurring;
Of the endless trains of the faithless—of cities fill’d with the foolish;
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light—of the objects mean—of the struggle ever renew’d;
Of the poor results of all—of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me;
Of the empty and useless years of the rest—with the rest me intertwined;
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer.

That you are here—that life exists, and identity;
That the powerful play goes on, and you will contribute a verse.”
― Walt WhitmanLeaves of Grass

I watched the movie “Dead Poet’s Society” recently.  The above quote was one of the greatest lines in the movie.  It got me thinking about what it is I am here to contribute.  “What is my verse?”  As we move forward evolving into a new consciousness, how do I play a part in creating positive change?

I take small, and sometimes not so small, steps in my process of transformation.  I know I have come a long way in a relatively short period of time.  Yet, there is a part of me that feels that I haven’t even begun to tap into the calling that I am here to fulfill.  There is something bigger that I am here to contribute to.

Until I figure that out, I continue the process of healing and transforming myself, so that what radiates from me transforms and heals whoever I connect with along my journey.  As I walk this road, if my life can be about that and about deepening my sense of connection to others, to the planet and to the universe, this would be the verse I would want to contribute to this powerful play.

  1. Leah, I will be 65 years old in June and I am still wondering what my contribution will be. I gave birth and helped raise 3 healthy children who became balanced and healthy adults and positive members of society. I feel their achievements are theirs not mine.

    I have helped many people recover health and in doing so opened doors for them to persoanlly and spiritually grow. But again, that’s their achievement, not mine.

    I have restored my body after physical and emotional abuse; even healed it from the symptoms of lymphatic cancer. That is my achievement but maybe offers only a word to my verse.

    Whenever my words reflect my wonderings about my path, I receive the most beautiful e-malls and messages from the wonderful people whose paths have crossed mine. Each telling me how I influenced their life.

    I am just saying, that every step we make takes us into an unknown and new area of our life. Because we exist in the field of unlimited potenial we may never grasp a clear picture of what our verse is because the verse is not as important as the how we live our lives while seeking answers.

    Keep writing my friend. I love reading them. Your soul is awakening.

  2. I wonder that all the time Leah. It really lends to wondering about personal value. Ever since I was a child I wanted to feel like I have made a difference. I think the lesson I am learning is that it isn’t about giant footprints left as evidence, but the tiny differences that impact us and others everyday. A smile, a gentle touch, a recognition of the value in another, a recognition of our own self worth..The verse doesn’t have to be grandiose, it just has to be intentional.
    Very nice post, thank you for sharing
